Blue, green and violet that shift every time you move your hand.

Atlas held up the sky so others could stand. Some days you do the same, and this ring is for the quieter moments in between. The 8mm band is polished tungsten carbide, heavy enough to feel on the finger. Along the top run three inlays: a bright channel of synthetic opal between two strips of dark, iridescent abalone shell. Turn your hand and the color moves from aqua to deep purple.

  • Scratch-resistant tungsten carbide band
  • Synthetic opal framed by abalone shell
  • 8mm wide, US sizes 6 to 15

The metal

Tungsten carbide

  • Very hard. One of the hardest metals used in jewelry, so the band resists everyday scratches far better than gold or silver.
  • Solid weight. Noticeably heavier than steel or titanium: you feel it on the hand.
  • Cannot be resized. Check your size in the size guide before ordering.

The band is tungsten carbide, one of the hardest materials used in jewelry. It resists scratches and keeps its high polish through ordinary days, and it has a satisfying weight that reminds you the ring is there. The edges are beveled and the inside is smooth, so the 8mm width stays comfortable from the first coffee to the last meeting.

Three channels are set into the face. In the center, a bright strip of synthetic opal; on each side, a darker strip of abalone shell with a natural shimmer. Together they catch the light in blue, green and purple tones. The tungsten is tough, but abalone is a natural shell, so the inlay prefers to stay dry and away from harsh chemicals.

How to wear it

The colors make this a ring to wear on its own. On a plain t-shirt and jeans it gives the outfit a single point of interest; with a patterned shirt it can pick up a blue or a green from the print. Keep the rest of the hand simple: a steel watch on the other wrist and nothing else on the same finger. The ring or middle finger suits the 8mm width best.

Choosing your size

Sizes run from US 6 to 15. Half sizes are offered at 6.5, 7.5, 10.5, 11.5, 12.5, 13.5 and 14.5; between 8 and 10 the ring comes in whole sizes only. It has a standard fit, so order your usual size. If you normally wear a half size between 8 and 10, choose the next whole size up, since an 8mm band sits a little closer than a thin one.

Why this piece

Built on tungsten carbide
The band is very hard and resists the scuffs of everyday life, so the polish around the inlay stays clean.

Color that never sits still
Synthetic opal and abalone shell shift from bright aqua to violet with the angle and the light, a far cry from a plain metal band.

Questions

Should the opal and abalone ring come off before a swim?

Yes. The tungsten carbide does not rust, but the abalone shell and the opal inlay prefer to stay dry, so take it off for the shower, the pool and the sea.

Is the opal natural?

No. The center inlay is synthetic opal, chosen for its bright color. The two side strips are abalone shell, with the shimmer that comes from the shell itself.

What outfit suits the opal and abalone inlay ring?

A plain t-shirt and jeans, where it is the single point of color, or a patterned shirt that picks up its blue or green. Keep a steel watch on the other wrist and nothing else on that finger.

Which part is opal and which is shell?

The bright center channel is synthetic opal. The two darker strips on each side are abalone shell, with a natural shimmer.

What does synthetic opal mean?

Opal grown in a lab rather than mined, with the same bright play of color. It is used here for a vivid, even center channel.

Is the band polished?

Yes. The tungsten carbide has a high polish with beveled edges that frame the three inlays, and the inside is smooth.

Does the color look the same all the time?

No. It shifts with the angle and the light, from bright aqua to deep violet, so the ring rarely looks the same twice.

Can I return it if the colors are not what I expected?

Yes, within 30 days of receiving it, as long as it is unworn and in its original Atlas packaging. Return shipping is at your cost.
