Every version starts with a stainless steel base. Stainless steel does not rust, so the chain handles sweat, showers and long days without special care. On top sits a gold-tone plating applied by electroplating, which gives the warm color. It is a plated finish, not solid metal through and through, and we say so up front.
The three styles differ in texture. The bead chain is a fine chain dotted with 2mm beads, the most delicate of the three. The box chain is made of small square links with a geometric edge. The snake chain is a smooth, fluid tube that reads as one line of light. Pick the texture that suits the rest of what he wears.
How to wear it
Wear one alone over a white tee or a crew-neck sweater, where the gold line shows against the fabric. Under an open button-down, it sits just inside the collar for a dressier look. These chains also layer well: put the bead chain next to a wider chain, or wear two of the three textures together. A gold-tone watch or ring ties it all in.

The box and snake chains measure 18 inches (45cm) and the bead chain 16.5 inches (42cm), which rests on the collarbone for most men. The 1.5mm box chain and the bead chain include a 2-inch (5cm) extender, so they can sit a little lower or fit a broader neck. Choose by texture and width: the bead chain is the finest, the 1.5mm box is the classic middle, the 1.8mm snake is slightly bolder. For a broad neck, the box chain with its extender is the easiest fit.
